MXG Architects were unsuccessful in their bid for this competition in Northwich, Cheshire. Their proposal, was to create a ‘living bridge’ as a focus for activity.
The brief was to make maximum use of the riverside location set in the Baron’s Quay area of Northwich town centre. Their proposal consisted of an ‘iconic bridge’ that would act as a public space and containing an auditorium, gallery space, information point and a bar/restaurant, to bring together key activities in the town.
The architects said of their design “First of all, our intension was to symbolize the new spirit and vitality of the city. What could be more expressive than a bridge coming over the water, over the future…the bridge becomes a place above the water, an extension of the cultural complex, a living part of the city” and that “Our project reflects the search for the reconciliation between the cultural, architectural and urban requirements and the conviviality of the inhabitants.”
