German architect Hoyer Schindele Hirschmüller’s apartment block in Berlin’s Mitte district consists of three dwellings with space for retail at ground level.
The project combines two different models of housing; the inner-city block and private suburban home. The architect sought to avoid the usual divisions between and within individual dwellings found in most city housing blocks, instead the spaces for these homes are distributed over the block’s five floors. Each house has a unique layout, and its own street entrance and private courtyard.
Within each home internal open stairwells connect different floors, additional circulation is through an elevator accessible by all three homes.
